Dental Bone Grafting in West Bloomfield, MI

Rebuilding lost bone volume in the jaw so it can properly hold an implant, performed here in our office as part of your implant treatment.

The Bone Graft That Makes Implants Possible

Jawbone shrinks once a tooth is gone, because the bone no longer gets the pressure of chewing through a root. If enough has been lost, there is not sufficient volume to hold an implant securely, and grafting rebuilds it.

Being told you do not have enough bone is one of the most common reasons patients give up on implants. It rarely needs to end there. Your dentist performs bone grafting in our office, so this stays one continuous course of treatment rather than a referral.

Who We Help

Is This Right for You?

Grafting is a step toward an implant rather than a treatment on its own. Imaging tells us whether you need one at all.

  • You have been told there is not enough bone for an implant
  • A tooth has been missing for years and the area has sunk in
  • A tooth is about to be removed and you want to protect the site
  • Gum disease has damaged the bone around a tooth
  • A denture has been worn long term and the ridge has flattened

Your Treatment

From Imaging to Implant

  1. Imaging and Measurement

We image the site and measure exactly how much bone is there and how much is needed, so the graft is planned rather than guessed.

  2. The Graft

Grafting material is placed into the site with local anesthesia and covered so it stays protected while your body works on it.

  3. Healing

Your own bone gradually grows into and replaces the graft material over several months. We check the site as it heals.

  4. Placing the Implant

Once there is enough solid bone, the implant is placed into a site that can hold it properly for the long term.

After Your Treatment

Bone Grafting Aftercare and Recovery

Recovery varies from person to person. This is what most patients can expect, and your dentist goes through your own instructions with you before you leave.

The First 24 Hours
Keep pressure off the area and leave it undisturbed, since the graft needs to stay where it was placed. Do not rinse forcefully, spit, or use a straw for the first day. Noticing a few small granules in your mouth over the first days is common and does not usually mean the graft has failed.
What to Eat and What to Avoid
Soft, cool foods for the first several days keep pressure off the site. Avoid straws, crunchy foods, and anything that requires firm chewing near the graft. Smoking meaningfully reduces the chance of a graft taking, so avoiding it through healing matters more here than almost anywhere else in dentistry.
Swelling and Discomfort (Edema)
Discomfort after a graft is usually milder than patients expect, and swelling tends to peak in the first two to three days. A cold compress against the outside of the face helps during the first day. Your dentist will go over what to take before you leave.
How Long the Graft Takes to Mature
The gum over the site generally closes within a couple of weeks, but the graft itself matures much more slowly as your own bone replaces the grafted material. That process commonly takes several months before an implant can be placed, and the exact wait depends on the site and how much bone was needed. Where the upper back jaw is involved, a sinus lift may be part of the same plan.
When to Call the Office
Call our office if bleeding continues past the first day, if swelling increases after about the third day, or if a noticeable amount of graft material comes away rather than a few granules. Call if discomfort is climbing instead of easing, or if the site develops a bad taste or odor. A fever is always worth a call rather than waiting to see whether it passes.

Placed and Restored in One Office

We place and restore implants in our own office, including bone grafting and sinus lift procedures when the jaw needs preparing first. It is common for a practice to send the surgical half elsewhere and handle only the final crown. Here every stage happens in one place, with one set of records and one team who already know your case.

New patients are usually seen within the same week.

Quick, smooth and pain free

I have a bad phobia of going to the dentist after bad previous experiences. The doctors and assistants here were very accommodating and made sure I did not experience any pain. My experience was very quick, smooth and pain free.

Common Questions

Bone Grafting Questions

Is bone grafting painful?

The procedure is done with local anesthesia and most patients compare the recovery to having a tooth removed. Soreness for a few days is normal.

How long before I can have the implant placed?

Usually several months, because the graft has to be replaced by your own bone before it can support an implant. Smaller grafts heal faster than larger ones.

Can grafting be done at the same time as an extraction?

Often yes. Grafting the socket when a tooth comes out preserves the ridge and frequently avoids a larger graft later. Ask about it before the extraction.

Do I have to have a graft to get an implant?

Only if the bone at the site is inadequate. Many patients have enough bone and go straight to placement. Imaging answers this before any decision is made.

Does insurance cover bone grafting?

Coverage varies, and some plans contribute when the graft is part of preparing for an implant. Our team checks your benefits first and explains what applies before treatment is planned. The quickest way to get a real answer for your own case is a short conversation. Call us at (248) 863-9109 or book online.
