A checkup is two things: a cleaning that removes what brushing cannot, and an exam that finds problems while they are still small. A cavity caught at a checkup is a filling. The same cavity found a year later is often a crown or a root canal.
Your exam also includes an oral cancer screening at no extra cost, and if your gums measure deeper than they should, your dentist will talk to you about a deep cleaning rather than simply booking you in again in six months. Children and adults prone to decay are often offered fluoride treatments at the same visit.

It changes nothing about how you are treated here. The first visit is an examination and a conversation, not a lecture, and we sort what we find into what needs attention now and what can be watched. Plenty of people have put this off long enough to be embarrassed about it and every one of them was seen the same way as anybody else. If nerves are what kept you away, say so when you book, because sedation with nitrous oxide, also called laughing gas, is available on most visits.
Yes, and that is how most appointments run. The exception is a first visit where we find gum measurements deeper than a routine cleaning can reach, because cleaning above the gum line while disease is active below it treats the wrong surface. In that case your dentist explains what a deep cleaning involves and books it properly rather than doing half a job on the day.
