Wisdom Tooth Removal in West Bloomfield, MI

Wisdom teeth removed when they are impacted, crowded, or causing pain, in the same office you already know rather than somewhere unfamiliar.

Wisdom Teeth Removal With a Clear Recovery Plan

Wisdom teeth are the last molars to come through, usually in the late teens or early twenties. Many people simply do not have room for them, and a tooth that cannot come through cleanly can push on its neighbor, trap food, or become infected.

Not every wisdom tooth needs removing. Your dentist assesses the position and the space available, and recommends removal only when leaving them in place is likely to cause problems. The visit itself follows the same principles as any of our tooth extractions, and if one flares up painfully before your planned appointment, that becomes emergency dentistry and we fit you in.

Who We Help

Is This Right for You?

Not every wisdom tooth has to come out. These are the signs that yours might need to.

  • You have pain or pressure at the very back of your jaw
  • The gum over a back tooth is swollen or keeps flaring up
  • Imaging shows a wisdom tooth angled into the tooth in front
  • Food traps repeatedly behind your last molar
  • Your dentist has recommended removal before orthodontic treatment

Your Treatment

From Assessment to Recovery

  1. Assessment and Imaging

We image the position of each wisdom tooth and its roots, and confirm whether removal is genuinely needed or whether monitoring is reasonable.

  2. Planning Your Comfort

We talk through what to expect, arrange the appointment when you can rest afterward, and make sure you have aftercare instructions in advance.

  3. The Removal

The area is fully numbed and the tooth is removed. An impacted tooth may need to be sectioned to come out cleanly, which reduces pressure on the bone.

  4. Recovery

Swelling peaks in the first couple of days and settles from there. We check your healing and are reachable if anything concerns you.

After Your Treatment

Wisdom Tooth Removal Aftercare and Recovery

Recovery varies from person to person. This is what most patients can expect, and your dentist goes through your own instructions with you before you leave.

The First 24 Hours
Expect some oozing for the first few hours, which is normal, and bite gently on the gauze until it settles. Keep your head raised, rest rather than exercise, and leave the area alone. Do not rinse forcefully, spit, or drink through a straw, because the clot forming in the socket is what protects the bone underneath it.
What to Eat and What to Avoid
Stay with soft, cool foods for the first day or two, such as yogurt, eggs, mashed vegetables, and smoothies eaten with a spoon rather than a straw. Avoid anything crunchy, seedy, spicy, or very hot, and avoid alcohol and smoking while the site is healing. Chew on the opposite side and return to your normal diet gradually, as comfort allows.
Swelling and Discomfort (Edema)
Swelling usually peaks around the second or third day and then eases, and some bruising along the jaw can appear as it settles. A cold compress against the outside of the face helps during the first day, after which gentle warmth is often more comfortable. Your dentist will go through what to take before you leave, and staying ahead of discomfort works better than waiting for it to build.
How Long Recovery Usually Takes
Most people feel ready for their normal routine within about three to five days, though this varies with how the teeth were positioned and how many were removed. The gum tissue generally closes over the following two to three weeks. Bone continues to fill in underneath for several months after that, which happens quietly and is not something you tend to notice.
When to Call the Office
Call our office if bleeding has not slowed after the first several hours, if discomfort is increasing rather than easing after the third day, or if you notice a foul taste or odor that does not clear. A deep ache that begins a few days in can mean the clot has been disturbed, which is treatable and worth being seen for promptly. Also call for a fever, swelling that grows after day three, or numbness that has not faded, and seek urgent care for any difficulty breathing or swallowing.

Common Questions

Wisdom Tooth Removal Questions

Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?

No. If a wisdom tooth has come through straight, is cleanable, and is not causing problems, it can usually stay. Removal is recommended based on position and risk.

How long is recovery from wisdom tooth removal?

Most patients feel much better within three to five days. Swelling peaks around day two and eases after that.

Is it better to have them out young?

Generally yes. Roots are less developed and bone is more forgiving in the late teens and early twenties, so recovery tends to be quicker.

What is dry socket?

It happens when the clot over the socket is lost too early, exposing bone. Avoiding smoking, straws, and vigorous rinsing for the first days greatly reduces the risk.

Does insurance cover wisdom tooth removal?

Most plans cover part of it, and how much depends on the position of the tooth and the type of removal needed. We verify your benefits before the appointment so nothing about the cost comes as a surprise afterward. The quickest way to get a real answer for your own case is a short conversation.
