Oral Cancer Screening in West Bloomfield, MI

A simple, painless check of your mouth, tongue, and throat, included with your regular exam so anything unusual is caught early.

An Oral Cancer Screening at Every Checkup

Oral cancer is most treatable when it is found early, and early changes are usually painless, which is exactly why they get missed. A screening looks for them before they would ever prompt someone to make an appointment.

Your dentist includes a screening with every routine dental exam. It adds a minute or two to your visit and costs you nothing extra.

The value of it is entirely in the repetition. One screening is a snapshot, and a snapshot cannot tell you whether a patch of tissue is new. Several screenings across a few years are a record, and a record is what makes a change obvious while it is still small. That is the real argument for keeping up with routine visits even in a year when nothing hurts.

Who We Help

Is This Right for You?

Screening happens at every routine exam whether you ask for it or not. These are the reasons it is worth having.

  • You are due for a routine exam
  • You use or have used tobacco in any form
  • You drink alcohol regularly
  • You have noticed a sore, patch, or lump that has not healed in two weeks
  • You have a family history of oral or throat cancer

Your Visit

What the Screening Involves

  1. A Visual Check

We look at your lips, cheeks, tongue, the floor and roof of your mouth, and the back of your throat for anything that looks unusual.

  2. Feeling the Tissues

Your dentist gently feels the tissues and the sides of your neck for lumps or areas that feel firmer than they should.

  3. What Happens If We Find Something

Most findings turn out to be harmless. If something needs a closer look, we explain it plainly and arrange the right referral without delay.

Common Questions

Oral Cancer Screening Questions

What happens during an oral cancer screening?

We check your mouth, tongue, and throat visually and gently feel the tissues and neck. It takes about a minute and is included with your exam.

How often should I be screened?

At every routine exam, so most patients are screened twice a year without needing to ask for it.

What should I watch for between visits?

A sore, red or white patch, lump, or area of numbness that has not healed within two weeks is worth a call, even if it does not hurt.

Who is actually at risk of oral cancer?

Tobacco in any form and heavy alcohol use are the long standing risk factors, and the risk climbs when the two are combined. What has changed is that a growing share of cases now appear in people with neither, linked to HPV, and those tend to sit further back near the tonsils and the base of the tongue. Sun exposure raises the risk on the lower lip. Being low risk is a reason to keep screening rather than to skip it, because the cases that surprise people are the ones nobody was watching for.

What happens if you find something?

Most of what gets found is harmless: a cheek bite, an irritation from a sharp filling, a cold sore on its way out. When something looks worth watching we record where it is and how big it is, then ask you back in about two weeks, because ordinary irritations resolve in that time and the ones that do not are the ones worth acting on. If it is still there, we refer you for a biopsy. We do not sit on it, and we do not alarm you before there is anything to be alarmed about.

Does the screening cost extra?

No. It is part of your regular examination at Royal Dental Center. The quickest way to get a real answer for your own case is a short conversation. Call us at (248) 863-9109 or book online.
