Sinus Lift in West Bloomfield, MI

Adding bone beneath the sinus in the upper jaw when more height is needed to place an implant securely, done here in our office.

A Sinus Lift (Sinus Augmentation) Before Upper Implants

The sinus cavity sits directly above the upper back teeth. When those teeth have been missing for a while, the sinus tends to expand downward and the bone below it thins, leaving too little height for an implant.

A sinus lift, also called sinus augmentation, gently raises the sinus membrane and places grafting material in the space created. Your dentist performs this in our office as part of planning your upper implants.

Who We Help

Is This Right for You?

This usually comes up when upper back teeth have been missing for a while. It is planned in advance, so it is never a surprise on the day.

  • You are missing upper back teeth and want implants
  • Imaging shows too little bone height below the sinus
  • Upper teeth have been missing for several years
  • A previous dentist told you the upper back area was not possible
  • You are planning a full upper arch and need support at the back

Your Treatment

How the Procedure Is Done

  1. Detailed Imaging

We measure the exact bone height below the sinus and map the anatomy of the area before deciding on the approach.

  2. Raising the Membrane

The sinus membrane is carefully lifted and grafting material is placed in the space beneath it, all under local anesthesia.

  3. Healing

The graft turns into solid bone over several months. We give you clear aftercare instructions, including how to protect the area while it heals.

  4. Implant Placement

Once the new bone is ready, the implant is placed into a site with enough height to hold it securely for the long term.

After Your Treatment

Sinus Lift Aftercare and Recovery

Recovery varies from person to person. This is what most patients can expect, and your dentist goes through your own instructions with you before you leave.

The First 24 Hours
Do not blow your nose, and sneeze with your mouth open if you have to, because pressure through the sinus can disturb the graft above the tooth roots. Sleep with your head raised and avoid straws, bending, and heavy lifting. A little blood tinged fluid from the nose on the treated side in the first day or two is not unusual.
What to Eat and What to Avoid
Soft, cool foods for the first several days, chewed away from the surgical side. Avoid straws and avoid anything that makes you strain. If you have travel booked, tell us, since air pressure changes are worth planning around in the early weeks.
Swelling and Discomfort (Edema)
Swelling around the cheek and sometimes under the eye is common and usually peaks around the second or third day. Mild bruising can follow as it settles, and some stuffiness on that side is expected. Your dentist will go over what to take, including anything to help keep the sinus clear.
How Long the Graft Takes to Mature
The gum closes within a couple of weeks, while the grafted bone itself matures over several months before it can support an implant. The wait varies with how much height had to be gained and how your own bone responds. A sinus lift is often planned alongside bone grafting elsewhere in the jaw as part of one implant plan.
When to Call the Office
Call our office if nasal bleeding continues beyond the first couple of days, if congestion or pressure is getting worse rather than better, or if you notice salty tasting fluid draining persistently. Call if swelling grows after about the third day, or if discomfort is increasing rather than easing. A fever, or a feeling that air passes between your mouth and nose, should be reported promptly.

Placed and Restored in One Office

We place and restore implants in our own office, including bone grafting and sinus lift procedures when the jaw needs preparing first. It is common for a practice to send the surgical half elsewhere and handle only the final crown. Here every stage happens in one place, with one set of records and one team who already know your case.

New patients are usually seen within the same week.

Common Questions

Sinus Lift Questions

Is a sinus lift a major procedure?

It is more involved than a simple graft but is routinely done under local anesthesia in our office. Most patients return to normal activity within a few days.

How long does a sinus lift take to heal?

The graft usually needs several months to become bone strong enough for an implant. Your dentist confirms timing with follow up imaging.

Will it affect my breathing or sinuses?

The membrane is lifted rather than opened, and normal sinus function is not changed. You will be asked to avoid blowing your nose forcefully while it heals.

Can the implant go in at the same time?

Sometimes, when there is enough starting bone to hold the implant steady. Otherwise placement waits until the graft has matured.

Why do upper back teeth need this and lower ones do not?

Because of what sits above them. The sinus is an air space in the upper jaw, and when an upper back tooth is lost the bone beneath that space thins from below while the sinus itself tends to expand downward into the room the root used to occupy. There is no equivalent space under the lower back teeth, so a lower site that has lost height usually needs a straightforward bone graft instead.

Is a sinus lift covered by insurance?

Some plans contribute toward the graft as part of implant treatment and others do not cover it at all. We check your benefits before scheduling and explain what applies in your case. The quickest way to get a real answer for your own case is a short conversation. Call us at (248) 863-9109 or book online.
