Usually yes, and it is the question we hear most. A baby molar is not replaced until around age ten to twelve, so a cavity found at six has years left to cause trouble. Decay that reaches the nerve becomes an infection sitting directly above the adult tooth forming underneath it, and a baby tooth lost too early lets the teeth beside it drift into the space that adult tooth was going to use. That is a straightforward filling turning into an orthodontic problem.
Make it routine rather than a negotiation, twice a day at the same points in the day, and expect to do it for them or after them until around age seven, because the hand control is simply not there before that. A smear of fluoride toothpaste is enough under three and a pea sized amount after. The habit that matters most and gets skipped most is cleaning between the teeth, since that is where the cavities we find in children usually start.
