Tooth Colored Fillings in West Bloomfield, MI

Tooth colored fillings repair cavities and small damage. Bonding reshapes a chipped or uneven tooth, usually in a single visit.

Composite Fillings and Dental Bonding in West Bloomfield

A filling removes decay and rebuilds the tooth with a tooth colored material that blends in rather than showing as metal. Treating a cavity early keeps the repair small and avoids the dental crown or root canal that waiting often leads to.

Bonding uses the same material cosmetically, to close a small gap, smooth a chipped edge, or reshape a tooth that sits out of line with its neighbors. Both are usually finished in one appointment. Where the change you want is bigger than that, or you want several front teeth matched, porcelain veneers are the longer lasting answer.

Who We Help

Is This Right for You?

Small problems are quickest to fix while they are still small. Any of these is worth having looked at.

  • A checkup found a cavity that needs treating
  • A tooth is sensitive to sweets, cold, or pressure
  • You have a small chip on a front tooth
  • An old silver filling has cracked or is breaking down
  • A small gap or uneven edge bothers you when you smile

Your Treatment

What Happens in the Chair

  1. Numbing the Area

The tooth is numbed first for a filling. Simple cosmetic bonding often needs no anesthetic at all.

  2. Removing the Decay

Your dentist removes the decayed part of the tooth and cleans the area, keeping as much healthy structure as possible.

  3. Rebuilding the Tooth

The tooth colored material is layered in, shaped to match the natural contour, and hardened. Shade is matched to the surrounding tooth.

  4. Checking the Bite

We check how the tooth meets its opposite and polish the surface, so nothing feels high and nothing catches your tongue.

Common Questions

Fillings and Bonding Questions

How long do tooth colored fillings last?

Most last many years. Their lifespan depends on size, location, your bite, and how well the area is kept clean.

Can I replace my old silver fillings?

Yes. Old fillings can be replaced with tooth colored material, particularly when they are cracked, leaking, or breaking down at the edges.

Does getting a filling hurt?

The tooth is numbed first and most patients feel only pressure and vibration. Mild sensitivity for a day or two afterward is normal.

What is the difference between a filling and bonding?

They use similar material. A filling repairs decay inside the tooth, while bonding reshapes or rebuilds the outside of a tooth for appearance.

Why does a new filling feel sensitive?

Some sensitivity to cold for a week or two after a deeper filling is normal. The nerve inside the tooth was irritated by the decay before you arrived and by the treatment that removed it, and it settles as it calms down. What is not normal is sensitivity that is getting worse rather than better, or a sharp jolt when you bite, which usually means the filling is a fraction high and needs a minute of adjustment. Call us for that rather than waiting it out, because a high filling keeps taking more force than the teeth beside it.

Can a filling be redone if it fails?

Usually yes, and the question your dentist is really asking is how much healthy tooth is left. A filling that has chipped at one edge can often be repaired or replaced with another filling. Each replacement takes a little more tooth structure with it, though, so a filling that has already been redone twice and keeps failing is telling you the tooth has outgrown that repair. That is the point at which a crown protects it better than a fourth filling would.

Will the filling match my tooth?

That is the main reason composite has replaced silver for most work. The shade is chosen against your own tooth in the chair, and composite is placed in layers and shaped to the tooth rather than packed into a hole, so it follows the contour of the surface it is repairing. Front teeth are matched more carefully than back ones because they are judged in daylight and in photographs, and a bonded repair on a front edge is one of the few treatments in dentistry that finishes in a single visit.

Does insurance cover fillings?

Fillings are among the most widely covered treatments, and we accept most major PPO plans. Bonding done purely to change how a tooth looks is usually treated as cosmetic instead.
