Dental Sealants in West Bloomfield, MI

A thin protective coating over the chewing surfaces of back teeth, sealing the deep grooves where a toothbrush cannot reach.

Dental Sealants That Stop Cavities Before They Start

The chewing surfaces of molars are not flat. They have deep, narrow grooves that trap food and bacteria and are too fine for a toothbrush bristle to clean out. That is where most cavities in children and teenagers begin, which is why sealants come up so often in kids dentistry. They pair well with fluoride treatments, which protect the smooth surfaces a sealant does not cover.

A sealant flows into those grooves and hardens, leaving a smooth surface that can actually be cleaned. Applying one takes a few minutes, requires no drilling, and no numbing.

Who We Help

Is This Right for You?

Sealants protect the grooves a toothbrush cannot reach properly. These are the teeth that benefit most from them.

  • Your child has adult molars that have recently come through
  • Your child has had cavities in baby teeth already
  • The grooves in your back teeth are deep and stain easily
  • Brushing well has still not prevented cavities on chewing surfaces
  • You want the least invasive prevention available

Your Visit

How a Sealant Is Placed

  1. Checking the Tooth

We confirm the grooves are sound and free of decay. A sealant goes over healthy enamel, not over an existing cavity.

  2. Preparing the Surface

The tooth is cleaned and dried and the surface prepared so the sealant bonds properly. Nothing is drilled and nothing is numbed.

  3. Applying the Sealant

The material flows into the grooves and is hardened with a light. We check the bite so nothing feels high afterward.

  4. Checking Them Over Time

We check sealants at every visit and reapply if one has worn or chipped, which keeps the protection continuous.

Common Questions

Dental Sealants Questions

How long do dental sealants last?

Several years in most cases. We check them at each visit and simply reapply if one has worn down or chipped away.

Are sealants only for children?

They are most common in children and teenagers, but adults with deep grooves and no decay in those teeth can benefit too.

Does applying a sealant hurt?

No. There is no drilling and no anesthetic. The tooth is cleaned, the sealant is applied, and it is hardened with a light.

Do sealants replace brushing?

No. They protect the grooved chewing surfaces only. Brushing, flossing, and regular cleanings still protect everything else.

Which teeth actually need sealing?

The permanent molars, mostly the first ones, which arrive around age six and are often mistaken for baby teeth because nothing falls out to make room for them. Their chewing surfaces carry grooves narrower than a single toothbrush bristle, which is why most childhood cavities start there rather than between the teeth. We look at how deep the grooves actually are rather than sealing everything by default, so shallow molars that clean easily are usually left alone.

What if there is already decay in the groove?

Then a sealant is the wrong treatment and we say so. Sealing over active decay traps it, and the tooth gets a small filling instead. That is why sealants are placed after an examination rather than as a routine add on, and why we check them at every visit afterward. A sealant that has chipped at one edge needs repairing, because a partly sealed groove is harder to clean than one that was never sealed.

Does insurance cover dental sealants?

Many plans cover sealants for children and teenagers, sometimes up to a certain age. We verify your benefits before we place them and tell you if your plan will not. The quickest way to get a real answer for your own case is a short conversation. Call us at (248) 863-9109 or book online.
